Its always sad when the time comes to remove a mature tree but this Chestnut, near Towcester, had in previous years suffered a major failure leaving substantial decay within the tree and a heavily weighted limb over a neighbouring property. The decision was made with the help of a consultant to remove the tree and replace with a new tree.
The large cavity at the top of the tree was also a concern as it was a perfect habitat for a range of nesting birds, so two days before we carried out the works we did an aerial inspection of all cavities and crevices within the tree for nesting birds or any other species residing within the tree and recorded our visit.
For the removal we used a 17m access platform to effortlessly move around the canopy removing limbs in controlled pieces and chipping the branches using our large Bandit chipper into the largest of our two lorries.
The chipping process was made a lot easier thanks to our digger fitted with brash grab, making for very efficient processing of material.
The most difficult part of this removal was the removal of a large limb (over 20 inches in diameter), which extended over a neighbouring property with an immaculate garden and very little access. With a heavily compromised stem we were not going to be able to use traditional rigging techniques.
At Rose-Tree we are very experienced in the use of cranes for arboriculture and we were able to formulate an in-depth lifting plan to safely remove the rear limb.
Using measurements taken of branch diameter and length we were able to quantifiably estimate the weight of individual crane picks and formulate a safe system to effortlessly remove the limb without causing damage to the neighbouring property other than a light dusting of sawdust.
All in, the tree took a day and a half to complete, with the tree and branch wood removed on day one and the stem felled and site tidied on day two.
