When the Wildlife Trust needed a serious amount of trees removed before nesting season we were recruited to bring our wealth of knowledge and experience in forestry and large conservation projects to their site. The matrix of large lakes are home to a number of wetland birds. But years of vegetation growth had caused the lake banks to be overgrown with large Willow trees blocking the flight lines of migrating wildfowl and needed to be cleared to increase the conservation value of the site.
Working on lake side banks to remove trees is tricky work and removing large trees which are weighted towards the water is very slow, labour intensive and dangerous. Traditionally, the situation of these trees require them to be manually removed by hand, much to the discovery of some of some other inexperienced, contractors working on site. To undertake this mission in quick time we utilised our 8 tonne digger with selector grab to remove whole trees from the water side, stack, dry and burn. On average we cleared one lake a day and completed the project in a few days. Compared to the other contractors on site armed with only chainsaws and a 6 inch chipper who cleared on average two trees a day.
